Newborn Session Prep Guidelines
Here are some helpful tips to encourage a smooth and successful newborn session.
-
Be sure to notify me within 3 days after your baby's birth, so I can update your session time on my schedule. If your baby was just born and want a session, please contact me ASAP so I can squeeze him/her on my calendar to stay in that 6-10 day age range. The 6-10 day range is crucial because once they hit the 2 week mark, their eyesight improves, which causes them to want to stay awake for longer periods, which can make it difficult to get them into certain poses. Babies can also start developing colic after 14 days, which is another factor that can make a session last longer. If your baby is more than 3 weeks old, no problem since we will probably stick to more swaddled poses to ensure they stay content and calm.

Highly Suggested: Try to keep your little one awake as much as possible an hour or 2 before their session, so they are completely zonked during their session. This is a very helpful tip in order for your baby to go to sleep right away, and stay asleep for majority of their session. You can keep them awake by giving them a bath, or playing with them before you leave for your session. Keeping them stimulated yet content is key. From experience, mommies and daddies can't stand it when there's an over exhausted baby, so you be the judge if they should stay awake or not. Please note that if you have a long commute to my studio, sometimes clients have found it beneficial to have one parent drive, while the other parent sits back with the baby to keep them stimulated. Again this is highly suggested, but not necessary. Just know that babies are just tiny humans. As adults, when we have been awake for a long period of time, all we want to do is go into a deep sleep. Once we have had a nap, we have much more energy afterwards. Same goes for newborns, just in much shorter durations.

Highly Suggested: Regardless of when your baby last ate, give them a topper feeding as soon as you arrive at my studio. This puts babies into a milk comatose and keep their bellies full throughout majority of their session. Formula fed babies can go the whole session without needed another feeding session. Nursing babies sometimes will need to eat once, twice or sometimes three times in the middle of their session.

Please bring a binky/pacifier that your baby likes. I do have back-up pacifiers, just in case. No attachments on the binky please. Binkys make a session go by much faster and smoother. Just note that if your baby does not take a binky, please expect a longer session time.

-
Please bring your baby in a zipped or buttoned sleeper since it is much simpler to get them out of those than an outfit that has to be pulled over their head.

-
For premium newborn sessions, family photos are always done first. If you want family photos with your baby wearing only their birthday suit, it is suggested to bring an extra set of clothes for the parents, just in case there are some accidents.

-
If siblings are included, I recommend the following:
-
Once family photos are done, I no longer need both parents and the siblings to stay. Sometimes clients have brought 2 cars (if available) so when all family photos are finished, dad will take the siblings home, while mom sticks around for the remainder of the session.
-
Have a loved one pick up the sibling(s) from my studio, that way they do not have to stick around for 3-4 hours.
-
If none of these work, I advise clients to bring a tablet or some form of entertainment that will keep them occupied in the lengthy timeframe.
-

-
Not all poses are 100% guaranteed since your little one is the boss and decides what he/she likes. However following these guidelines will help ensure that the desired poses can be done. Since the safety of your baby is 100% top priority, please inform me if you don't feel comfortable with the intended pose. If a pose is requested, and I do not feel comfortable executing that pose, please understand that I am doing that for your best interest.

-
Please come into the studio to feed your baby, instead of feeding in the car. I have a private area, with a comfortable nursing chair that mom can use to feed the baby.

The studio will be pretty warm for newborns, so I suggest to bring light clothing or layers to remove if it's too warm. Temperature is usually kept around 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit so it's nice and cozy for the newborns. Babies were in a 98 degree incubator for 9 months, so they like the warmth. However for the baby's and mother's safety, it won't be too warm to prevent overheating and exhaustion.

I completely understand the chaos after having a Newborn, however please be mindful of my schedule as well, as it might affect my other clients. Please inform me if you plan on being early or late. I do send out reminder emails 24 hours in advance of your session as a courtesy. Please note, if a client is late, a possible late fee will be added on to your session. Late fees start at 15 minutes after intended start time of $50 per 15 minutes.
So example: If a client's session time starts at 12:00 PM, and the client arrives at 1:00 PM, the client will be charged for those 45 minutes: [(45 mins/15 mins) x $50 = $150].

-
I do offer complimentary fresh hot coffee, chilled bottled water and snacks at my studio.

For the safety and health of your baby, I will be wearing a mask at all times during your Newborn's session. Please do not feel obligated to wear a mask in my studio. This is just a precaution to make sure I do not pass along any germs I may have onto your little one. If I do become ill, I will notify clients within 48 hours to possibly reschedule.
